30 Day Vegetarian Challenge: Day 10

As I write this up, i’m just finishing up my 10th day of Vegetarianism. I’ll say so far that I’ve zero problems adjusting food-wise to my new lifestyle. I’ve enjoyed trying new foods like quinoa, and trying new combinations of food together. I think I’m starting to develop a slight obsession with fresh cilantro. Tonight was made another nice concoction of food goodness tonight. Lucky for you, I’m going to tell you all about it. I saw a recipe on line called “Mexican Pasta”. I thought it looked yummy so I book marked it and saved it for later. After my run tonight I wanted to make an actual meal, and I thought his would be a good chance to try this one out.

I boiled up some shell pasta, and “browned” up some Boca meatless crumbles. The recipe called for black beans, but I have already eaten up all the black beans I had purchased, so this would be a good substitute as well as try another new product. While those were cooking, I cut up a green pepper and some fresh cilantro. I was lazy and just bought a can of diced tomatoes. Basically, take all those ingredients, combine them together, as well as mix in some peach pineapple salsa. Then I topped with some cheese and went to town. One thing to note: If I had a larger pot, I would have combined them all together in said pot and it all warm up together. I had to nuke my bowl to warm it all together.

It turned out pretty great if you ask me. I made enough for lunch and probably and easy supper tomorrow night. Yay planning ahead! We washed it down with some freshly made peach tea. A serious weakness of mine.

If you remember early on, when I was kicking around the idea of trying this out, I had planned on not keeping the diet after my challenge. If I had to give an answer today, I think I would say that I was going to keep it for the foreseeable future. I like this change in my life right now. Physically, I feel the best that I have in a really long time. I’m struggling a little bit with my physical strength though. I feel like I haven’t as much energy lately to be doing my planks, push-ups and arm curls. I’ve been still running on days that my son isn’t with me, and been pushing myself on those days while running. I just feel like I don’t have the strength be working on my muscle building exercises. Some days are better than others. I’ve made sure that I’m getting plenty of protein and iron in my diet, so I think my body is just adjusting to those changes yet.

As far as running goes, things are getting better and faster. I ran into some knee pains during a run Monday night, so I had to cut the distance shorter than what I had wanted to. Tonight, I wanted to keep pushing down my two mile time. I’m happy to report that I broke the 16 minute mark that I was striving for. I was able to finish in 15 minutes and 47 seconds. I want to see how fast I can push myself for a mile now. A few months ago I was able to run a mile in seven and a half minutes. I wonder if I could get that down to or under seven on a good day? Maybe you’ll find out.

I’ve decided with all this running and training, I want to start running 5Ks this fall. There’s one next month in North Liberty I’m looking at and in October in Cedar Rapids. I don’t think it’s for any real purpose other than just something to do for myself. I’m by no means wanting to become a competitive runner. I’ve been running so that I can become more comfortable in my own skin; I’m almost there.

I’m still watching the fluctuations in my weight on a daily basis. This week I’ve been around 193 most times of the day. I set an arbitrary goal of 190 pounds as my weight when my challenge was up. This was basically 10 pounds lighter than what I was when I started. If things continue going as they are now, 185 might not be out of the question. I’m not sure where I want to be for my ideal weight. I’m working building more muscle on my frame, so we’ll see where everything’s at in another 20 days.

Vegetarian Challenge: End of Week 1

I have concluded my first seven days of my dietary change. In regards to feeling the need to eat meat, nothing made me feel the need nor my willpower never wanted to give up on me.

Some of my interesting things I’ve noticed this week:

  • My weight was all over the place this week. I was anywhere from 202 at my heaviest at the beginning of the week and down to by the middle of the week. I’m fairly certain that my drastic change in weight was mostly due to my smaller portions ate through out the week as I had an extremely busy work week, and I didn’t find a whole lot of time to eat. At the time of this writing, I’m back to about 198 or so. With spending the weekend with my boy, I didn’t have much of a change to get a good workout in!
  • Speaking of working out, by the end of the week, I noticed that I was feeling physically week in the strength department. I was able to get two, two-mile runs in mid week, but by Friday night, I felt like I could hardly do any pushups or planks at all.
  • Trying new foods and new food combinations are a lot of fun and can turn out very tasty. I’m really looking forward to trying more recipes that I find online, and trying new ingredients.
  • When shopping for groceries this week, I really found my self examining the nutrition facts and ingredients in most products. Since I’m cutting out all the meat in my diet, I’ve had to make sure that I’m getting plenty of protein and iron from other sources.
  • I started donating plasma again this week for some extra cash. It will be interesting to see if this change affects my blood levels at all.
  • How have I gone this long without having a food processor? That thing makes meal prep beyondo quick! I love it.
  • I found it really easy this weekend to make meals for my boy, and still keep me vegetarian. Most the time so far, I’ve just prepared separate meals for the two of us. Sometimes, we’ve been able to overlap. For example, tonight I made mac and cheese and hot dogs for my kid, and I had some mac and cheese with him, but a salad as my main noms. I cut up a hot dog and put it in his mac and cheese after I put it in a bowl, so I could still eat some mac and cheese should I so desire. I thought to myself, there’s probably no actual meat in these hot dogs anyway! He likes to say that I eat plants and not ‘food’. He goes, “sometimes you eat plants, but sometimes you eat food, too”. He cracks me up!
It hasn’t been real hard this week per se, but I am noticing that I haven’t felt much like preparing much for meals, and I don’t have as much around the house to make super quick vegetarian meals. I’ll have to start looking ahead for those sort of things this week. I got a few boxed meals to eat at work because I’ll be very busy again code-monkeying away this week. I should have a pretty decent chance to get some good running in this week to, hopefully I’ll keep continuing on the track I was on before, weight wise, before the weekend.
Continue with me as I journey into my second week!

Vegetarian Challenge: End of the Work Week 1 (Day 5)

This week has been long and especially hard. Mentally draining. Physically draining, and even sometimes emotionally draining. It’s what my life is right now.

I had a successful trip to the grocery store to stock up on vegetarian meal options. I broke down and bought a food processor (thanks for the birthday money Dad!! <3) as it seems like most recipes call for combining a several ingrediants together, then using the food processor, mash them up together. I’m going to need one if I want to try to make my own hummus anyway! I chopped up an onion last night. It works pretty dandy, and saved me a lot of time! The other highlight of my shopping was finding quinoa in rice/grains aisle at Target. I was surprise it was even there. It’s pretty expensive, but it should also last me a while because I’m not going to be making it at every meal.

Although, my big bonehead move of the night was realizing when I went to make supper last night, I actually didn’t have a can opener or a strainer! At least the MacGuyver (or McGruber if you will) is strong in me and I was able to get a can of black beans opened, rinsed and strained. How you ask? Well just so happens I’m going to share my secrets with you. I randomly found in my kitchen drawer (yes, I actually a single drawer in my tiny kitchen), and I found a “pop top” can puncture thing. The kind where you punch two holes in the top of a big can of juice (tomato or old style Hi-C), and I was able to puncture enough holes in it to make a nice starburst shape that came out. From there I just took a plastic container you get deli meat in, and put a bunch of holes in it with a knife. That created a make shift strainer, albeit very slow. Needless to say it got the job done.

Mission with the kiddo this weekend, venture to the dollar store to pick up can opener and strainer (among any other cheapie kitchen stuff I might find ususal for cheapie plastic prices).

I made a mixture of Quinoa (typically pronounced KEEN-wah), corn, black beans, and onions seasoned with cilantro and ground cumin. It turned out pretty awesome if I’m being honest. The quinoa was awesome filler in my dish, and it’s actually a superfood full of all kinds of good stuff including a boat load of protein. That is something very important that I need to make sure I keep getting by cutting all the meat out of my diet. Warm up a torilla, toss on some cheese and sour cream, and you’re all set! Photo of goodness below:

I was quite impressed by the taste and how full I was after the one burrito I had. I’m looking forward to trying other quinoa recipes in the future.

I’ve taken it pretty easy on the exercise front. I ran twice this week for only two miles per run; however, I’ve kicked up my pace on my two mile run. Wednesday night I finished in 16 mins 37 seconds, then the following night I pushed myself a bit more and came in at 16 mins 9 seconds. If I could keep an 8 min pace for two miles, I would be extremely happy. My shoulders and biceps have been pretty sore too, I haven’t done much in the planking, push-up and arm curl department either.

With that being said, I’m still holding steady at a 195 pound average. Looks like 190 should be easy to get to with a little more work. Obviously, I want to be gaining muscle too, so we’ll see where I’m going to end up at the end of my journey.

Looking forward to the weekend with my little guy, so I might just be writing up a summary of the weekend some reflections on my first week of my challenge.

Vegetarian Challenge: Determining My Grocery List

Man, am I running on fumes for food at my house. I can tell it’s grocery time. I purposely ran down what I had for food in my house, so I could start fairly fresh, literally and figuratively. I’ve spent the better part of an hour scouring the interwebs for some good vegetarian recipes. I had a couple of book recommendations from a friend of mine, that I’d love check out, but that means I need to find them somewhere or order them online. So, in the mean time, I’m searching online.

I bookmarked several recipes I want to try in the near future. The problem with buying fresh fruit and veggies, is spoil time. I’ve noticed a lot of vegetables won’t last much over a week. It’s really noticeable where you purchase them too. I’ve noticed that Target’s produce will keep fresh the longest. Fareway’s prices are a bit more competitive, but don’t last nearly as long. Walmart? Yeah…. we’re not going there.

Basically I’ve bookmarked a few bean salads, potato and bean enchilada’s, black bean burgers, and hummus recipes. I want to try them all, but I’m only one dude, and I’ll have to pick a day or two every week that I can find time for some cooking. Here’s a basic rundown of what I’m planning picking up tomorrow after work:

Cumin
Cilantro
Pinto Beans
Black Bean
Lentils
Chickpeas/Garbanzo Beans
Vegetable Oil
Tomato
Green Pepper
Cucumber
Quinoa (if I can find it)
Bread Crumbs
Lemon Juice
Tahini
Lemon Juice
Parsley
Mango
Rice

I realize that’s a huge list for a single dude, but I think my plan is to have the non-perishable stuff to last for 2 – 3 weeks. Then pick up fresh produce on a weekly, bi-weekly basis. It will depend on what keeps, and how much of what I eat during the week.

Where in the heck can I get Quinoa in the Cedar Rapids area, that’s affordable?

I won’t use an entire can of beans when I make a meal, so if I rinse and drain a can of, say black beans, can I just keep the remaining, unused beans in the fridge in a small plastic container?

The other challenge I’m going to run into I think is my budget. I’m pretty tight money wise right now trying to keep up with a house, utilities, loans, and *sigh* lawyers. This challenge also gives me a chance to focus some energy on something else other than the difficult times in my life; something I’m in need of.

Ran an easy two miles tonight in just over 16 and a half minutes. Morning weigh in was 196. Bed time weight in: 193… Pretty sure something is messed up with my scale?

**

On a side, semi-related note, with my job, we can spend eight hours a year volunteering at an approved location, using volunteer time off. Basically that means, I get paid to go volunteer somewhere. Today three other co-workers and myself, went to a place close to downtown called Mission of Hope. We helped them prepare lunch, and help finish up keeping the breakfast crowd happy. This locations basically is a place for people to go, and won’t turn anybody away (unless they are causing problems), and they can get a cup of coffee, some noms and visit with others. They’re also a Christ-centered ministry that offers physical, emotional & spiritual support to any of those in need. Even though life is a pretty hard going and very stressful for me now, it can always be worse. I have a good job, a roof over my head, a wonderful son, and very loving family and friends.  I’m very thankful for the good in my life that God has given me, and He keeps me humble with the challenges that have been put forth in front of me.

Day 2: Vegetarian Challenge

Today’s entry is going to short and simple again today. Life is getting pretty crazy busy and hectic. These times could make it hard to stick to my diet and hitting up a fast food joint, instead of doing things at home. Home is cheaper and better for you, so I’ll have to make sure that I’m sticking to that as best as I can.

Today was a pretty simple for meals. I had the same peanut butter toast this morning as I had yesterday. For lunch I made a black bean burger with cucumbers, green peppers and lettuce on the sandwich. I also made a small side of hashbrowns to go with it.

Tonight I tried something based on a recommendation of my sister. Grilled cheese with hummus with some cottage cheese on the side. Basically you make a grilled cheese, but also spread on hummus between the cheese and bread. For good measure I put some yellow and red peppers inside as well that warmed up nicely in my sandwich.; Havarti was the cheese of choice tonight, and I recommend this cheese highly. Ironically it was the same sister that brought this cheese on a trip we took earlier this summer. Thanks sis! I then had some moo juice to wash it all down (obviously in a Black Label Society glass). You can see this in my image down below. It was pretty tasty.

For exercise tonight, I played league sand volleyball with my co-workers. After I got myself and my sandy kid all cleaned up, I did some planks and some push ups. My arms are pretty sore from some resistance bands from the previous night. Tomorrow I have a full schedule for the day, so I highly think that a run is out of the question.

Wake up weight: 196. Bedtime weight: 196. Looks like I had a pretty well balanced day today. We’ll see if this trend continues. I’m pretty much running on fumes grocery wise at home, so tomorrow I’ll probably talk about what I’m going to get and what will be on the menu.

Day 1: Vegetarian Challenge

Today was a pretty rough day for me. I was busy all weekend, so I didn’t have much time to catch up on rest. Because of that I felt like my butt was dragging all day at work. I don’t think I fully woke up till about 11:30 am or so after getting up before 7 am. I felt rushed all day

I’m sure the first day will be the easiest. I had peanut butter on toast for breakfast, some dried mangos for a late morning snack, Bombay Potatoes for lunch, some wheat thins for an afternoon snack, and some cheese pizza with co-workers while bowling for a team building event. I’m not quite sure what tomorrow will bring me for lunch. I have my little guy tomorrow, so I might have to come home for lunch and visit him tomorrow.

I worked out a boat load with my son on vacation last week, so I’m going to take it a bit easier this week to start. As I noted in my last entry, I’ve been working out regularly since going to physical therapy to fix up a bum knee, so I’m actually a bit ahead of the game right now. I did do my usual planks, push-ups and arms curls tonight. I’m exhausted and I don’t feel like I have much energy tonight. I’ve been working really hard at work lately, and sleep hasn’t been the greatest for me. I probably won’t have much of a chance to run this week, unless I do so during my lunch breaks. I don’t like to run on my lunch break, because I lose some time where I can just shut off the brain for a few minutes and not think. Then I have to shower and get unstinkified before I head back to my cave of a cube.

I do need to get groceries at some point this week, so hopefully I’ll find time to look up a few recipes and get some goodies to satisfy myself.

Short and sweet tonight. September 13th will be day 30, so we’ll see where this journey is going to take me.

Weigh in this morning 200. Weigh in just before bed 199.

General question: Is it better to buy canned chick peas/garbanzo beans? If not, can i just get a bag of dried ones, and boil them up? I’m completely clueless. I would like to try to make my own hummus, since it’s a new obsession of mine, as well as anything else I might find that looks tasty online.

My 30 Day Vegetarian Challenge

There has been some major changes to my life recently; I’ll spare you any deals as it’s completely a different story. Over the last few months, I’ve had a chance to explore who I really am, and who I want to be, and where I’m going with my life. One of the changes I’ve made is within my daily food consumption. I’ve never really been a picky eater, but I was always hesitant to try new food, especially from different ethnic backgrounds. Sure, I’ve been a fan of Chinese (Americanese) food a long time, but would rarely verge out of my comfort zone. I grew up on farm in the Midwest (Monticello, Iowa) for the first six years of my life, then moved off the farm, but still living in the country with a ‘meat and potatoes’ family. I’ve always enjoyed most vegetables, but never really gave myself to really explore with them much.

Now we can fast forward to today, I’ve discovered many ethnic food backgrounds that I enjoy an extreme amount. Indian and Mediterranean are two of my favorites today and eat them with any chance that I get. I’m pretty much obsessed with chickpeas, lentils, paneer, and hummus. Now that I’m stocking my own fridge, I keep a good assortment of veggies including green (yellow and red) peppers, broccoli, cucumbers, snap peas, lettuce and others. In a week I typically go through three peppers, a cucumber, and a few florets of broccoli. I’ve come to some realizations that I’ll sometimes go a few days with out eating any sort of meat. Typically, it’s because I enjoy Garden Burgers, and recently tried some Black Bean Burgers. Those were really tasty by the way. My meat consumption is usually deli sandwiches on my lunch break or turkey burgers, but rarely red meat. I like to make Tator Tot Casserole with my kid is with me, as he enjoys that. I mean, who wouldn’t enjoy that goodness?

Since I’m not frequently eating meat already, I want to try a 30 day challenge and be vegetarian for that time period. On top of that I’m becoming a four-to-five times a week exerciser. This past spring, I ran (literally) into some knee issues that caused me to attend physical therapy to correct the issue for a few months. Since I had to start doing exercises on my own, I started getting into a daily/bi-daily routine of doing exercises to strengthen up my leg with the crudder knee. Now that everything is fine and dandy again, I’m able to run again without any pain. I’ve also begun a push-up program on the quest to being able to doing 100 continuous push-ups. One of the bands I was sent home with for leg exercises now is being used to do arm curls as well. I’ve recently started doing planks to trim and strengthen my core too. Simply put, when I’m not with my kid, I’m running and/or doing other exercises. I’m doing this all with out the use of a gym or much equipment, save the balance ball I purchased. I would also like to start doing pull-ups too, but it’s not currently in my tight budget to purchase anything. Sometimes when I’m playing at a playground with my son, I’ll do some pull-ups on the park equipment.

By now you’re probably thinking “quit rambling you bum, and get to the point”. What’s the goal of this you might ask? And why the heck would I be doing something like this? I want to be more cognizant about healthy living in regard to what I’m eating and putting into my body, as well as physically and being more active. I’m going to start journaling my daily (or bi-daily) meals and snacks, how hard it’s for me to adjust at home, how hard is it in public or at other’s houses for meals, among other things. I’m also going to start keeping a closer tab on my body physically. Ideally, I would like to be in the 190ish pound range, weight wise. I currently fluctuate between 196 and 202, depending on the time of day, how much I ate that day, and if I exercised and for how long. I’m not out to prove anything to anyone or anything like that. I want to be more comfortable with where I’m at life physically, and what I’m eating.

Will I keep this life style after these 30 days are complete? Probably not; I’ll most likely always be an omnivore. I would like to find the balance that fits me and my lifestyle best in regards to meat vs non-meat consumption. Do I feel bad about eating animals? I don’t to simply put it. I be the first to admit that I like to have the ignorance about how most of the meat industry treats the animals and how things are processed. It’s kind of a “gray area” that I just try not to dwell on. I guess what I mean is that I love animals, but some are pretty tasty too.

I don’t plan on jumping in full bore into vegetarianism this very second. I’m a very, very analytical person, and I like to think things through and usually have a very well thought out plan of attack. I talked briefly with a vegan friend of mine to pull some incite on how she’s approached her lifestyle change and challenges that arose. She just passed her one year as vegan. Go CC! I’ll look into people other experiences, stories, how they approached their weekly menu, and what other information I can drum up on the internets.

I hope you’ll find my experiences and stories useful and/or enjoyable. I’ll try to be posting pictures of my journey too, but of me and what I’m eating! My goal now is to start next week. That gives me a few days and the weekend to get a game plan in place (and eat any meat I have in my house for me). I won’t be changing my son’s diet to ad-hear to my own. He’ll still have is dinosaur chicken nuggets, fish sticks and other things kids like to eat.

Will Jose Bautista Repeat Last Season’s Success??

13 HRs to 54 HRs. 40 RBIs to 124 RBIs. Only 233 more ABs. This jump in Jose Bautista’s production equates into a 5 year $56 million contract that was recently agreed upon by the Blue Jay and Bautista. The real question here is will Bautista have the same success this season, come back to earth, or will end up with a glaring Brady Anderson type single season. Obviously, I’m not implying anything about Baustista’s career season last year, just stating how it could turn out if he hits on average 15 HRs a season, then jumps to 50, then back to 15. Several factors could have played a role in his explosion of a season.

Last season was the first season the he was truly an every day player that played in 161 out of 162 games. He made a majority of his starts in right field, but had 40 some odd starts at third base, where it appears he’ll most likely be playing this season. It finally appears that he’s found a home with the Blue Jays as made evident by the huge contract. Back in 2004, he played for four different teams (Royals, Devil Rays, Orioles and finally the Pirates by way of the Mets), in a single season. He found some inconsistent playing time with Pittsburgh for parts of five seasons, and eventually being traded to the Jays for Robinson Diaz.

Will he have the same sort of power numbers this year? I personally think he will not. He’s going to come back to earth and have something closer to what his normal season should be. I’ll get to some stat projections a little bit later. Is getting out of Pittsburgh that big of thing for player? Baustista’s numbers have drastically improved since leaving PNC Park and started playing in the Rogers Centre. The other thing to note and mention here was his change in hitting coaches from the Pirates to the Blue Jays.

Gene Tenace was the hitting coach for the Jays while the team was managed by Cito Gaston. He’s got the “grip it and rip it” approach to hitting and being a much more aggressive hitter instead of working counts. He also preaches to hitters that batting is a more mental than physical. Both Adam Lind and Vernon Wells have spoken praises to this approach of hitting with Tenace as coach.

The other interesting stat with this approach of hitting and Bautista specifically, is how much his rate of strikeout went down. While in Pittsburgh he struck out one out of every 4.1 ABs. Since joining the Blue Jays that rate is now one in every 4.4 ABs, but last season where Tenace was the coach the entire season under Cito Gaston it dropped to one K for every 4.9 ABs. It should also be noted that his walk rate has gone up since joining the Jays.

Unfortunately, last season was Tenace’s last as coach as he decided to retire. Dwayne Murphy has replaced him under new coach John Farrell, so it’s hard to say if this will affect the players or not. Murphy coached first while Tenace was the batting coach, so it’s possible that he could pickup the same coaching strategy as Tenace.

Bautista should still have a good season, but he’ll come back down to earth a little bit after last season’s career year. I’m guessing he’ll be somewhere in the neighborhood of batting .250ish with 35 HRs, and 110 RBIs. With the departure of Vernon Wells, Bautista along with Adam Lind and Travis Snider will have to pick up the pace as they’re the “big boppers” now.

2011 Cubs Bench Outlook

Today we’ll be reviewing what options the Cubs have to fill out the remaining spots left on their bench. As I indicated in the startling lineup entry, Tyler Colvin and Jeff Baker will part of platoons, so they already have two of the five spots spoken for. There will only be five spots due to the 12 pitchers on staff and eight spots occupied by the starting lineup on opening day. Colvin will be getting plenty of playing time this season at all three positions in the OF and potentially first base. I would imagine he’ll get some action at the one bag this spring. He could possibly be a first basemen next year full time if Brett Jackson is ready to take over in the outfield with the contract of Fukudome expiring at the end of this season..

One spot will given to a backup catcher. Even though Welington Castillo is ready as he batted .300 with a home run in his September call-up, I’d still be inclined to give the spot to light hitting Koyie Hill. I will say though it’s before too long that Castillo will be ready for everyday play, so he might be involved in a trade down the road, or overtake Hill as the backup.

Hill handles the pitching staff and calls an amazing game. He had a down year throwing out base runners last season (18% catch rate) compared to the previous year (40% catch rate), but I like him as a backup yet. He’s never stuck with a team for very long prior finding a home with the Cubs, so I’m happy to see him stick here for a while. After the 2007 season, he accidentally cut off or severely severed all of the fingers on this throwing hand. He had them surgically repaired so he could still grip a baseball after the accident. It’s said they’ve fixed his hand so it grips a baseball perfectly. “We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better…stronger…faster.” He’s a great backup to have on the team, and he could easily fall into coaching after his playing days are over. In fact, he almost gave up during the rehab of his hand, and asked if there was a coaching position available on the team. Freshly claimed off waivers, Max Ramirez will factor into the final decision, but unless both Castillo and Hill have horrible spring or become injured, Ramirez will find himself fourth in the depth chart and probably fighting for playing time at AAA.

That give us one more infielder and outfielder on bench. The backup infielder position is up for grabs between youngster Darwin Barney, who has an awesome baseball name if I might add, and former Cub and veteran Augie Ojeda. Both Barney and Ojeda can play second and short. With Jeff Baker a natural 2B, who can also play 3rd and 1st, we’re going to focus more on backup to Castro at short. Barney has been playing short for the majority of his minor league career thus far. Ojeda was on the Cubs roster back in the early 2000′s as backup infielder. I think Barney’s offensive upside will be a better fit than the light hitting Ojeda. Barney is another ideal person to hit 2nd or 8th in the lineup depending on the matchup. He doesn’t have a lot power, but he hit for a higher average doesn’t strike out much (only 197 in almost 1700 minor league at bats), he’s be a good candidate for a pinch hit when you need somebody to make contact.

This leaves us with the fifth outfielder. The main options in camp will include Jim Adduci, Brad Synder, Reed Johnson, and Luis Montanez. Top Prospect Brett Jackson is invited to camp, but with a log jam already stopping Tyler Colvin from having consistent playing time, I’d look for Brett Jackson make the team next season with Fukudome’s contract expiring after this season.

Reed Johnson was backup OF during the 2008-2009 seasons. His hustle on the field made him become a fan favorite in Chicago. He was grateful the team gave him a shot after being released by the Blue Jays in the spring of 2008. Since he made that fantastic catch versus the Nationals that literally wow’d Kerry Wood, my father-in-law has referred to him as “Speedy”. He plays fantastic defense but doesn’t possess a killer arm by any means. Him making the play late in the game is more important anyway. I was very happy to see Johnson sign a Minor League contract a few weeks ago wit the Cubs, as he was a favorite of mine with his “Charlie Hustle” attitude. I think he’s got the upper edge at the moment, if he can stay healthy. He’s perfect as a late inning defensive replacement or for a pinch hit against a lefty. He’s a career .300 hitter vs. LHP, so that’s another plus.

Synder has been putting some some decent power numbers in the minors (25 HRs 106 RBI .308/.381/.568), but he’s not all that much of a defensive specialist per se. He plays good defense, predominately in right field, but could easily play left as well and possess a little bit of speed. He stole 19 bases last year at AAA. I think he’s probably got a shot to be the first one called up if injuries occur now that Sam Fuld was traded to the Rays, but I don’t think he’s what the teams needs on the bench defensively.

Jim Adduci is a plus defender as he didn’t commit an error at all last season in 114 games across all three positions. He doesn’t hit for a lot of power, but possess above average speed. Keep an eye on this guy, he could easily sneak in this year as the fifth OF. He was acquired as a replacement for an injured player in 2006 in a Todd Wellemeyer trade with the Marlins. His father was a Major League player for four season with the Cardinals, Brewers and Phillies. He had a very good spring in limited action, so it’s safe to say he’s got a real shot at making the active roster this season.

Former Cub first round pick in 2000, Lou Montanez is back with the Cubs fighting for that fifth spot as well. He hasn’t had much success at the Major League level, and I don’t envision him making the roster. The younger players the Cubs have in the minors are just better (Synder, Adduci and Jackson). I’m not sure he’ll even wind up on the AAA squad this season due to this fact. If Johnson get’s the fifth spot, Synder, Adduci and Jackson could easily start in AAA now that Jason Dubois retired from playing and started coach position in within the organization.

I’ll also mention Fernando Perez, who was also acquired in the Matt Garza Trade. He’s fine as backup outfielder, but I like Johnson and Adduci more.

All of this boils down to two backup OF, two backup IF and one backup catcher and here are the players that will make the final cut:

OF: Tyler Colvin
OF: Reed Johnson
IF: Jeff Baker
IF: Darwin Barney
C: Koyie Hill

This will leave them a little light in infield depth, but Colvin could play first in a pinch. Barney will be able to play 2nd, SS and 3rd. Baker can play 2nd, 3rd, and 1st, so between those two, the team should be able to field a competitive team on a daily basis.

I think Johnson has the spot to lose based of his experience and defense he can bring to the table. With that said, Adduci could easily sneak in should the Cubs not feel Johnson is healthy enough to play the full season or has a poor spring. Adduci will still only be 25 when the season starts, so he could wind up a lot like Tyler Colvin in regards to when he gets his chance to play with the big league team, just one year behind in terms of years.
