Mashings and ramblings of a nerd
Vegetarian Challenge: End of Week 1
I have concluded my first seven days of my dietary change. In regards to feeling the need to eat meat, nothing made me feel the need nor my willpower never wanted to give up on me.
Some of my interesting things I’ve noticed this week:
- My weight was all over the place this week. I was anywhere from 202 at my heaviest at the beginning of the week and down to by the middle of the week. I’m fairly certain that my drastic change in weight was mostly due to my smaller portions ate through out the week as I had an extremely busy work week, and I didn’t find a whole lot of time to eat. At the time of this writing, I’m back to about 198 or so. With spending the weekend with my boy, I didn’t have much of a change to get a good workout in!
- Speaking of working out, by the end of the week, I noticed that I was feeling physically week in the strength department. I was able to get two, two-mile runs in mid week, but by Friday night, I felt like I could hardly do any pushups or planks at all.
- Trying new foods and new food combinations are a lot of fun and can turn out very tasty. I’m really looking forward to trying more recipes that I find online, and trying new ingredients.
- When shopping for groceries this week, I really found my self examining the nutrition facts and ingredients in most products. Since I’m cutting out all the meat in my diet, I’ve had to make sure that I’m getting plenty of protein and iron from other sources.
- I started donating plasma again this week for some extra cash. It will be interesting to see if this change affects my blood levels at all.
- How have I gone this long without having a food processor? That thing makes meal prep beyondo quick! I love it.
- I found it really easy this weekend to make meals for my boy, and still keep me vegetarian. Most the time so far, I’ve just prepared separate meals for the two of us. Sometimes, we’ve been able to overlap. For example, tonight I made mac and cheese and hot dogs for my kid, and I had some mac and cheese with him, but a salad as my main noms. I cut up a hot dog and put it in his mac and cheese after I put it in a bowl, so I could still eat some mac and cheese should I so desire. I thought to myself, there’s probably no actual meat in these hot dogs anyway! He likes to say that I eat plants and not ‘food’. He goes, “sometimes you eat plants, but sometimes you eat food, too”. He cracks me up!
It hasn’t been real hard this week per se, but I am noticing that I haven’t felt much like preparing much for meals, and I don’t have as much around the house to make super quick vegetarian meals. I’ll have to start looking ahead for those sort of things this week. I got a few boxed meals to eat at work because I’ll be very busy again code-monkeying away this week. I should have a pretty decent chance to get some good running in this week to, hopefully I’ll keep continuing on the track I was on before, weight wise, before the weekend.
Continue with me as I journey into my second week!
